Transkills: supporting transition to University

It is easy to focus on the end product (your essays) and overlook the impact of your own approach to the writing process. Some writers work from linear plans or maps where others need to just start writing for ideas to flow. Students sometimes ask when they should stop reading and start writing or whether it is advisable to write an essay in one sitting or in sections. What matters is what works for you and what kind of feedback you are receiving from your supervisers.

Take a look at the cartoons below. Which comes closest to the way you write? Your own style may be a mixture of more than one of these. Compare your answer with another MML student. How can you borrow approaches from other styles to help you avoid the potential weaknesses of your own?

Activity: Impact of writing style
